Archiving DV?

Ive got numerous digital video tapes from Hi-8 and Digital 8 recordings.
Where might I find a thorough guide describing the means in which I might
archive this information and retain the quality of my current recordings. I
have backed up a few of the Hi-8 tapes and find that I use 6 DVD's (21
minutes each DVD) to back up a 2 hour Hi-8 tape. I am archiving in AVI
format.

That sounds right...high quality video is
approximately 13 GB per hour.

Maybe it's time to consider a removable
hard drive for archival purposes.

Double layer DVDs might be an option also.

FWIW...if you burn Video DVDs...they are
rendered by duration instead of file size.

I keep my tapes as my "last-stand" archive as I only use them once. I also
have a DVD that I squirrel away for quick retrieval when required and then
only work with copies of that DVD.

What format do you archive in? Is there a way to retain quality and cut file
size? Ive been backing up my tapes in AVI format onto DVD, not knowing any
better.

When I logically contrast my 6 dvd's to backup 2 hours of Hi-8, against a
two hour "Hollywood" DVD, I assume that the AVI format is "bulky" considering
the quality of my recording is not as vivid as that of the "Hollywood" DVD,
(and the Hollywood DVD fits on one disk).

I dont have the technical knowledge to archive in any other format at this
time, (dont want to potentially sacrifice quality not knowing any better).
After searching the Pinnacle forum and other forum's I have not found an
informative summary of the format types detailing the pro's/con's/technicals
of the various formats. If anyone could point me to a technical discussion
of the technical aspects of the format options, I would be much appreciative.

I keep the original tape in the format as it came out of the camera. This is
unedited footage in its original form. I do this so that I can if necessary
reproduce DVD's from an original source and have no worries about
degradation.
