Is there any way to restrict the auto name checking feature of Outlook 2003
to only make suggestions that are in the the GAL? We don't want it to
suggest or display and cached names that are manually typed in but we want
it to work for all internal exchange email addresses.

TIA

No, you can just turn it off then as any typed names will always tried to be
resolved automatically or when you do a Name Check.

You can turn off autocompletion in Tool | options | email options | advanced
email options | suggest names while completing to etc.... As this is what
suggests names that may have been used once and are not in the GAL or
Contacts folders.

The names in Contacts and the GAL will still resolve.

To stop names in the Contacts resolving, remove it from the places Outlook
checks names (a setting in the Address book options)

Can I ask why you want to do this?

I can take a guess; if you mail with a lot of customers but all just a
single time to answer a question (like in a support desk), you really do not
want the cache as it might result in you accidentally sending a message to a
customer. You would really want to filter out those addresses and have it
resolve to internal (or otherwise approved) addresses only.
