restoring .pst files and favorites files

NOW I FIND OUT that backups should not be placed on read
only CD ROM....is there any way that I can retreive the
messages and address books from the CD?

Copy it back to your harddisk and remove the Read Only file attribute. Then
connect to it by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...
