I recently had a crash. Forgot to make a copy of an *.xls file. Had to
reformat and reinstall XP. How can I manage to restore this file?

Forget about it. I hate to say that, but if you reformatted your hard disk
and reinstalled your software, that spreadsheet is gone.

If you reformatted and reinstalled windows on the hard drive where this file
was located - you are likely hosed without laying out a large chunk of cash
to some professional who may/may not be able to recover the file.

After all - you not only erased everything with a reformat - but then you
wrote over the old sectors by reinstalling Windows XP.

As I thought.
Let's say I had this file on a external USB disk, and just deleted it. Which
I may also have done.....What then?

You could TRY:

Executive Softwares UNDELETE product is a great program.. You might consider
investing it it as well.

Your chances of recovering it are better - but hardly guaranteed.

You need to stop using the external drive immediately, so the disk space
occupied by the deleted file won't get overwritten. Then you have to go on
the internet and obtain an undelete utility, and use it on the external
drive.

Not to boast, but I have never had occasion to use or to recommend an
undelete utility, so hopefully someone more knowledgable than I will will
recommend a good one.

Hello,

EASEUS DataRecoveryWizard utility can help. Speaking about me, it was
easily able to restore deleted, lost file and unformat drive,
so I think you will also find it quite useful. Really recommended
tool, give it a try.
