First let me thank those on these newsgroups who helped
me 1) installl the backup function for windows XP and 2)
get my Sony laptop to communicate with my LaCie external
hard drive.

Two questions:

1) I have used the windows backup program to save both
the content of my c(programs)and d (data) drives of my
laptop PC to an external drive. Does this mean that if I
was to wipe those drives or somehow lose the data on them
I could just use system restore to put the stuff on my
external drive back on to my laptop? My past experience
with other computers operating other versions of windows
is that backed-up data works fine but not back-up progams
and system stuff.

2) In order to get my laptop to communicate with my
external LaCie hard drive I had to use the computer
magagment function to format the LaCie drive. The drive
is 190 GB so I only formatted half. This is because my
wife had already stored some stuff from her Mac on the
LACie hard drive. In doing the half format have I
written over the stuff she stored? Is there any way I
can check this short of using her Mac witht he external
drive?

Thanks for any help you can render.

Yours,

Ken

You will have the same experience with XP.

I would recommend an imaging program

I have tried both Acronis True Image and Drive Image 7

For me Acronis True Image 6 works much better.

The restore CD is mostly linux code is very compact.

.
that is factual ken and no reason to then backup
anything but data.

if you had xp pro they have asr which could be used to
return a broken xp to working shape. but with home you
would need ghosting software from a third party.
