Restore whole XP OS from backup file

Hello All,

I have a desktop with 200GB of HDD. I partitioned it into 3 drives (C, D &
E).

I installed XP Pro on C drive (XP Pro SP1).

After I installed it I did a backup on the whole Operating System and saved
it in D drive.

And my E drive consists of Important documents and downloaded Software.

Now my system is upgraded to SP2 and all other security patches

I want to restore my system with the backed up file (In D Drive).

Can you suggest me how to do that!

Also if I restore my system, do I loose all my important file and documents
in my E Drive? (I don’t want to loose them, and I can’t write them since they
are almost 8 GB)

Thanks in Advance
Kode

If you imaged the partition using Ghost, Drive Copy, Acronis, or Casper then
you should have no problem. Just simply image the backed up copy back to the
C: drive.
Using any of the above applications you won't loose the data on your E:
partition
The only problem you will have is that, bceause your back up image is SP1,
you will need to update to SP2 from the windows update site as soon as you
connect to the web. You will obviously have a lot of updates to download. It
would have been better if you had periodically imaged the drive after you
installed SP2. But, so long as you have a broadband connection you should
have no problems.
How you re-image the partition will be dependant upon what software you
originally used to image the C: drive. More guidance can be given once we
know the imaging software used.
