Hi folks,

I am running XP Pro on an old hard drive and have done a complete
backup using XP's backup program. I have a new hard drive which has
not been partitioned or formatted.

Can I use the Restore function in Backup to move all folders and files
to the new hard drive? Will it automatically format this new drive,
or do I have to do this manually? What else do I need to do?

Thanks in advance.

That wont work...Install new hd as slave on the same IDE cable as current C:
Set jumper pins accordingly. In xp,format new hd (run, type:diskmgmt.msc),once
thru,close out msc,go to run,type:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all
in
the DOS window, once its thru,xp is now on new hd.Also,D: being the new hd,
but if asigned diffrent letter, then use that letter instead. This only works
with
IDE hds,SATA will not work...

Disregard anything and everything that Andrew E. said in his response,
if you can even understand it. He is a useless bozo who insists on
polluting these newsgroups with useless, nonsensical and sometimes
dangerous suggestions.

I personally would not trust Windows XP's backup to create a complete
new drive. It is not intended for that function and will probably
fail if you try it.

Your new hard drive may come with a utility disk that includes a drive
cloning/copying utility or you can download one from the drive
manufacturer's web site. Another option is to use a commercial
program such as Acronis True Image which is well proven and reliable.

Good luck

Thanks, Ron.

Unfortunately, my new Western Digital HD did not come with any
software. I'll go to their site and look around. Failing that I'll
look at Acronis.
