Restore Shared folders and My Documents

B

BadHead

Hi,

I noticed today that I had lost the "Shared Documents" and "(My Name)'s
Documents" from the "My Computer" Window. They are usually the two topmost
folders, immediately above the "Hard Disks" listing. All that I have now is
a single "Documents" folder.

Any way to get these two errant folders back?

Thanks.
BadHead :)

Thanks very much for your answer. I managed to restore my documents
successfully.

How now can you restore the "Shared Documents" folder?

I have got so far as understanding that you alter the key
"{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}" in
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\My
Computer\NameSpace\DelegateFolders", but what do you place here?

I don't think it's caused by "{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}" key.
If that CLSID were missing, the entire section "Files stored on this
computer" would be hidden.

Thanks once again for responding. Maybe I did make a mistake, I saw link on
a Google search telling me how to remove shared folders from My Computer,
and I though reversing the process would accomplish what I wanted. No luck,
though.

TO tell you the truth, I'm not as fussed about restoring this item as I was
the My documents link and now you've helped me do that, I' happy.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for pointing out the article.

Clearly this is a big problem - all my photos, music etc on home PC is on
shared folder. Now its locked! and the shared folder has disappeared from
all system windows/menus.

However I do not really want to edit the register unless I have to, so

- I tried Msoft support - NO my Windows XP was supplied by Dell
- I contacted Dell - no they only look after the h/w - unless I pay
- suggested I contact Microsoft :-(((((

Its a big problem, so why dont Microsoft make the patch available???

Is it me - or is this totally unacceptable for a s/w company to hold users
over a barrel - for a clear bug in their code!!!

Hotfixes from MS are free to anyone that needs it, whether it's OEM or
not. They can't give you tech support for your OEM installation but
will send the hotfix. Follow the link in that article for contacting
product support to get the hotfix if that's what you want. Or if in the
US:

Call Microsoft Professional Customer Service @ 1-800-936-4900 (this line
is 24/7), there is an option for hotfix. A rep will email you a link to
the fix.

Exactly the same thing happened to me and I have to say I was VER
VERY scared I had lost around 80gb of data..
The problem arose when I was messing around with a temporary LAN.
set it up to share the 'shared documents' folder across the network.
However (and I dont know how it happened), when the LAN wa
disconnected I had lost my shared documents folder. In case anyon
has the same problem in the future, the way I fixed it was to 'tak
ownership of the folder' c:\documents and settings\al
users\documents using the help described in the link below

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&Product=winx

I restored the ownership of the folder to the administrator an
checked the box 'replace owner on subcontainers and objects'. Almos
a minute later everything was back on. I hope that this post i
useful and that it saves somone from having to wash their underpants
like I had to do

This or something similar just happened to me, alhtough I have Media Center
Windows. I don't think I have XP's take ownership?

Or do I need to turn "Simple File Sharing" off...
