Hi,

I have a problem with my Windows XP Pro, ocasionaly it
comes up with this message on startup "Windows has had to
restore one of the registry files from a log or alternate
copy" or something like this. The problem is that once
this has ocoured I have to wipe my machine and reinstall
windows.

This "feature" is part of SP1, does anyone know how to
disable it so it will stop breaking my windows
instalation. I don't want to not have the service pack
and it make my computer run much better.

Thanks

Kev

Are all your programs shutting down properly? Any errors in the Event
Viewer?

Do a Google search for ERUNT. It's free. It makes backup copies of the
registry and is easy to use (when you read how to use it).

I can't answer your question, but this may help next time it occurs.

If that message comes up regularly you have something wrong - probably
memory, possibly HD, or the shutdown not being properly carried through.
So the regular registry is damaged, and would not work. This is a
recovery of a backup that aims to get you back working again.

You might then try a boot with F8 at the BIOS going to black and take
'Last Known Good Configuration, which ought to be fairly recent and in
good order. If you then find you have to reinstall, then there is
something *really* wrong
