"registry data file had to be recovered" but PC crashes

An error message on my daughter's laptop says "One of the files containing
the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate
copy. The recovery was successful." Windows opens then crashes; this scenario
is repeated ad nauseam. As my daughter (in Australia) is off to work in South
Africa in under 48 hours, urgent help is needed!
Lap top is a mid-range 14-month old Core2 Duo with XP SP2. I ran Windows
Update when she returned home a few days ago. The problem began a day or two
later. No restore point set manually.
