Restore (Rebuild?) default indes/search extensions

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate (x86).

On the advice of a so-called IT "expert" - after having some dificulty
finding a file I was certain existed on the HDD - I (well HE) changed the
default indexing/searching so that ALL extensions were searched/indexed.

I have now been toild that this should NOT have been done - and in fact my
searches are now significantly slower (and no - it never found the file I was
after anyway!).

How do I restore my indexing/searching to Windows Vista Ultimate DEFAULT
extensions ONLY?

Hi,

Click Start and at the bottom in the Start Search box, type: index. At the
top you will see Indexing Options appear, click that. Now click on the
Advance button then click on Continue when UAC prompts you. On the Index
Settings tab click the Restore Defaults button and that should do it.

Well that sorta DIDN'T work!

Firstlt, the ONLY place ANYTHING remotely like what you describe can be
found is in control Panel\Indexing Options. (following your instructions did
NOT yield any screen options like you described).

Under indexing options\advanced there are two tabs one for index settings
and one for file types. It is the file types I want to restore to Windows
default as it is these that this "expert" changed! However there appears to
be no way I can restore these to the Windows default settings so ALL file
types remain selected and that is NOT what I want as it is indexing and
searching file tyes I don't want and don't know anything about!

Does this explain it any better and give you any ideas on what needs to be
done?

Unless rebuilding the index and/or restoring the index to original settings
under the first tab will do it it appears there is no clear way to achieve
what I need/want to do!
