search and rebuilding index

After finding out some of my files were not indexed, and after reorganising
my files, I decided to rebuild the index.
But now I see in the search pane a lot of files indexed at 1/1/1601 ????
when I open these files, they have a perfectly normal time stamp.

I do have the impression the index has still not finishec rebuilding (but
how do I determine that ?), maybe it gets solved after waiting and indexing
for some time ?

Somebody got any idea what is going on ?

Well the first thing would be to wait until indexing is complete. You can
see the current status in the window

Control Panel > Indexing Options

obsolete !

I read some of the other comments in this newsgroup and decided to give it
one more go by defining only a very limited number of extensions to index
(.msg,.doc,.xls,.ppt), hoping that now the indexing would be finished in a
couple of hours.
After 24 hours I still have only 78 items indexed ! Either the indexer says
"speed reduced due to user activity" or (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) "INDEXING PAUSED TO
CONSERVE BATTERY" , and the laptop is plugged in !!!!!!!

I was very pleased with desktop search under XP indexing thousands of files
fast and correctly without duplicates or strange date stamps. Now I have 3
entries in the search result for each and every mail I make: one in drafts,
one in outbox and one in sent items.

I think I am going to take a look at Google desktop...

Indexing should easily be finished in a couple of hours, if not 20 minutes
on an average system.

It sounds like your 'Power Options' settings are up the proverbial creek,
and admittedly they're not heavily advertised (if at all) .....

Control Panel > Power Options > Change advanced power settings > Search and
indexing > Power Savings Mode > Set to 'High Performance'

That should hopefully fix it.

Thanks for the tip. It did the trick and seems to have solved all problems,
not only speed of indexing but also the strange timestamps (1/1/1601) and the
duplicates of mails !

The settings were "balanced" (both for battery operation and for plugged in)
but apparently Vista reads balanced as unbalanced ?

yw...yeah, it's a bit of a bug that one, me thinks.

From memory it's the only setting that works - 'Balanced' and 'Power Saving'
don't. It's undoubtedly stung a number of people, with regard to search.

Glad it worked, anyhow.

I'm glad you got this working. This is a known issue where if you change the
battery setting in the advanced power options for indexing to Balanced or
Power Saving then that setting may also get applied when the laptop is
plugged in, preventing indexing from completing. The symptoms are that the
"indexing is paused to conserve battery" message is shown in the indexing
CPL even when plugged-in.
