Lost search function

The Vista search function appears to have partially stopped working.
Clicking on Start and thent typing in a program name for example still works.
However, in Word or Windows Explorer, where using the Search button used to
start files in the in the folder(s) being searched as you typed, it now fails
to find any files at all, even when I know they are there.

I have tried rebuilding the index, stopping and restarting the indexer, but
nothing seems to restore the search function.

Maybe the files you are looking for are not in the index. Not all
folders and files in folders are indexed. The entire drive is not
indexed, which there are only 3 default folders that are indexed out of
the box, unless you have changed the configuration to include more
locations for indexing.

Did you use the Adv Search and told the search to search non indexed
locations pointing the search to a drive or folder on the drive?
