Default file types in indexing

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate (x86)

A so-called IT "expert" told me to select ALL files types in the file types
tab in Indexing Options as I was having problems finding a file that I KNEW
was on the HDD but hat normal searhing did not find.

I now find my searhes are VERY slow.

I have been told I should NOT have selected all file types in indexing
options.

I do not know what files should NOT be selected by default.

How do I either restore the FILE TYPES to default OR get a listing of said
files so I can manually restore the default install situation.

Hi,

Control Panel/Indexing, click on advanced. Under troubleshooting is an
option to restore defaults.

You can restore the search defaults. Open explorer to any folder, type
something in search and hit enter. Click the "Search Tools" menu, and
"Modify Search Locations", then "Advanced" button, and click the reset for
defaults

You should do what the others say. But in addition to that, you can use
the ADV Search by using the Windows-key and F-key combination to bring
up the screen.

In the Adv Search, you can check mark on *Include non indexed, hidden
and system files, go to the Location box at the top, take it off of
Indexed Locations Only and point it to the <C> drive or other drives and
do the search.

If you use the display pane on the left hand side of the screen and
select the Computer Icon, you can search at the folder level on a drive.
However that part of the screen only shows when you start typing in the
Search box.

You can use the Alt-key while in the Adv Search screen to get more Menu
options like Tools.

What I am TRYING to achieve is a restoration of the selected File Types

window that opens).

ALL file types have been (inappropriately and apparently incorrectly)
selected. This is not only unnecessary but is contributing to my slower
searches. I want to deselect the file types that are NOT selected at install
of Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit) but I don't know which SHOULD be selected
and which should NOT be selected.

Why can't you tell it to Restore the Index to its out of the
box/original installed state and tell it to Rebuild the Index to corect
the problem.

If you want to find out what the original default file types are, then
you're going to have to hit Goggle and look it up.
