I have XP with all the updates I have never been able to get my system
restore function to work. I have turned off the monitoring and turned it
back on then waited a few days and then tried to restore from a point but it
just says that it is unable to restore.

Is there a chance some program is interfering with the restore function? I
use Spysweeper Windows washer and Norton Clean Sweep and Windows Doctor;
could any of these programs effect system restore from running? Any
insights or clues are appreciated. Thank you

What version of Norton Clean Sweep are you running?

Look in Event Viewer ( System tab ) for error messages where the Source
is sr and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event
Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Bert:
I check out the event log and see that I'm getting errors every bootup. I
went to these links but this stuff is way over my head.

1 - The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
BLACK
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

2 - The Human Interface Device Access service terminated with the following
error:
The specified module could not be found.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

3 - The ALi PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller service failed to start due
to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

Thanks for any help.

See response I posted to Bert.

There have been many conflicts between Norton products and Windows
operating systems over the years, notably the Norton Utilities. Norton
withdrew Crashguard in 2001 and it has not reappeared. In 2002 ( it may
have been 2003 ) Norton recommended not running a version of Cleansweep
with Windows XP.

The link below gives measures to fix a current problem, which may well
apply to your situation:
