Restore point named "Software Distribution Service 2.0"

My system is running Windows XP Pro SP2 and I also have Windows Defender
installed and running. Automatic updates are turned off as I prefer to
do my updates manually at a time of my choosing. The computer typically
is online and running 24/7.

Since installing Windows Defender, I have noticed that System Restore
has changed the name of the daily restore point it creates from "System
Checkpoint" to "Windows Defender Checkpoint", which is not a problem.

However, I am also seeing additional checkpoints being created in the
middle of the night with the name "Software Distribution Service 2.0".
In the past, I would only see a checkpoint with this name created when I
was installing updates. Why are these checkpoints now being created when
I am doing nothing on the computer?

Hi John,

The Software Distribution Service 2.0 restore point is created prier to
installing updates from Microsoft Update or Windows update.

Yes, that's the normal behavior. But I'm seeing these resore points in
the middle of the night when the computer is not in use. I have
automatic updates turned off and only do manual updates.

They should be created after running the manual update and before the
updates are actually installed.

Correct. But they should not be created when automatic updates are
turned off and when no manual updates have been requested.
