Cannot Perform System Restore Error "Software Distribution Service 2.0"

L

lostinXP

I am trying to perform a system restore and I get a message stating:

"System Restore Incomplete Software Distribution Services 2.0"

So I tried to restore back 1 day to the last restore point that was
named Software Distribution Services 2.0 and it failed, I went back
further and it failed also. I went back beyond any checkpoint naming it
as System Distribution Services and the same error occurs.

Any idea of what the problem is and how to fix it?

Please send replies to (e-mail address removed)

Thanks

Hi,

Create a new restore point as an undo restore point.
Try restoring to the restore point you where originally trying to
restore to from Safe Mode.

All About System Restore in WinXP
http://bertk.mvps.org

If this doesn't work, let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System
Restore logs that may have been created recently that may help us
diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Hi,
Sorry to bother you with this same problem (system restore as in
header), but I didn't see a response from the person who asked. I have
the exact same problem, except that a weird side-effect has come with
it: my drop down menu's in MS apps IE and PowerPoint aren't working.
For example, if I try to SAVE AS in PowerPoint it just hangs up, or try
to access another URL. So I followed your instructions and got the
following errors from Event Viewer and wanted to know what you thought:

I'm really sorry about that long list from event planner. After I
posted i had an idea to find the corresponding time stamp to my
"Software Distribution Service 2.0" problem (from Restore) and below is
the entry I found that corresponds almost exactly. What of these could
cause such problems with my MS apps like PowerPoint and IE?

Hi Rob,

The error below indicates the '~efe2.tmp' file is interfering with the
System Restore filter.

The first step is make sure that only the partition Windows is installed
on is being monitored by System Restore.

How to disable a monitored drive:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/drivedisable.html

Perform a disk clean-up and delete all Temporary files and Temporary
Internet files.

Do a search of all drives for '~efe2.tmp'. If found, post the path to
it's location.
