When I attempt to Create Restore Point or perform a Complete PC Backup, I
receive the following message:

The restore point (or backup) could not be created for the following reason:
The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried,
the error may not reoccur. (0x800423F3)
Please try again.

Repeated attempts continue to fail.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Mark, I'm seeing numerous reports of these errors in the newsgroups. I hope
to have a solution (or at least a cause) very soon.

I sent you email, but if you could let me know what kind of computer you
have (and is it brand new?) I'd appreciate it.

For the group:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor (2.4 GHz)
Memory: 2 GB Super Talent - PC6400 - 800MHz
ASUS M2N4-SLI ACPI BIOS Rev 0802
Chipset: AMD 1100 Rev 0

Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS

Drive 0: ST380013A ATA Device
Drive 1: WDC WD800JB-00JJC0 ATA Device
Drive 2: Memorex 52MAXX 3252AJ1 ATA Device
Drive 3: Plextor DVDR PX-740A ATA Device

Vista: 6.0.6000

About 4 months old.

Thank you Jill for all your help! I hope you find the problem.

In the meantime, I've reinstalled Vista (clean) and since found that all
functionality has been restored to Backup and Restore Points. This implies
that I possibly installed something not compatible or something malicious
that I just pushed past the UAC. Less likely, but possible, something in
Vista corrupted other files.

Now I have a backup and restore point so it won't be as ugly next time.
