hi this is the first time for me on this site, so bear with me! i'm not very
good on computers, but tryed to get microsoft windows help and support and it
needed identification number, i clicked the link to show me where i would
find this, but didnt work, so here i am asking if any one may know what and
where this is. also i have no idea why, but my two printers that i have on my
computer seem to not wanna print anymore, even though they are installed and
vista compatable, i cant -un-instal the one printer as its not in the
programs file on control panal AT ALL, only on my start up, my other one seem
to not want me to change ink anymore either! so i want to create a restore
point on my computer as you can gather i'm having quite a few problems! but
have no idea where to find this to create or even what to do. any sort of
feed back would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Hi Kelly--

What and where it is:

To get to the MSKBs (articles that show you how to do and fix things with
MSFT software) you just type http://support.microsoft.com and you may be
asked to sign in with what they are now calling a Windows Live ID. Sign up
on the left with the "sign up" link if you need one. It's an easy wizard
(or series of steps that will show on your screen).

As to the printers, I would do this. I would try to get them up and running
one at a time. I would unplug them both and turn them off and on. I assume
you're using USB ports. You might want to change the USB ports just in the
rare case one is not working. Again do this one at a time. Then restart
the pc to see if the new printer is recognized. Something should show up in
your notification area and you can click it and get a wizard to install the
printer driver.

What is in your printers folder? You can get to it by typing "control
printers" don't use the quotes in the run box you will find on your start
menu or else hit the Windows key +R key at the same time. If I were you I'd
delete both printers and then reinstall them.

One other point or issue. This is very important. A number of us had
gotten the Vista Print team to agree to default the correct port, but they
did what MSFT Vista teams have done a lot with Vista. When they shipped it
they did not follow though.

When you go into the printers folder, either before you delete them and try
to reinstall as I instructed you above, right click each printer>click
properties>then click the "Ports" tab> and make sure the check mark is in
the USB port not the goofey one that Microsoft Redmond Vista Print team
signed off on as a default. Do this for both printers.

Other issues that might be present are that your printers (unnamed by you)
are not compatible with Vista. The possibliity of this increases with age.
If they are you should be able to use the above proceedrue to install each
printer. You would have to check with the website of your printer makers to
confirm this.

Here is documentation from MSFT Vista team on how to install a printer:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/printing.mspx

One more thing Kel. Each and every problem you are having, post here and
someone will solve it and if you start reading the threads that interest you
you'll find it's easy to learn Vista or whatever else.

Good luck,

CH

By the way you weren't completely clear, but in your subject title you typed
the words restore point and then didn't reference system restore anywhere in
your post.

If you want to know how to use system restore, simply click on Start>type
restore in search>click on system restorewhen it pops up and the links that
will come up on the box will show you how to use System Restore if you need
it although I don't think it will help your printer problem unless you have
a restore point to before the printers stopped working if they ever did.

How to Use System Restore in Vista:

Good luck,

Is your Vista installation retail or did it come preinstalled on the
computer, meaning it's OEM? If OEM MS does not give support for that. You
would need to contact the computer manufacturer or the vendor who installed
Vista.

If it's retail right click on Computer | Properties. At the bottom of that
dialog box under Windows Activation is the Product ID.
