restore not working

When I logged in yesterday, the desktop was blank. I kept getting error
messages - including wininet.dll not found, IDE device failed, Explorer.exe
unable to locate compnent. Thru task manager, was able to try restore -
didn't work. Went into safe mode and copied wininet.dll from c:\i386 to
windows folder. now desktop has old icons, but they flash on and off. and I
still can't open anything. Was told by a friend to go back into safe mode
and get to the c: prompt and enter %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
and follow the instructions to restore to a prior date. Can get to c: and
enter above, Restore screen flashes on, then disappears. Can anyone help me
get my system back?

Try youre friend again....However,i would boot to xp cd,recovery, press enter
for password, select 1 for disk C: Type:HELP For all cmds, but you might try:
Enable And/or Listsvc For more info on how to run recovery options, chk
#307654 and #314058 Both from microsoft. Also,if youre IDE controller has
actually failed youre looking at a new PCI IDE controller,or a new board,to
chk
the memory and controller, download memory tester to a MS-DOS formatted
floppy disk(it runs on cd also),go to:http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Even though it's a "memory tester" it also chks the controllers.
