Hello, and thank you for your help.
Problem 1:
I'm currently running Windows XP Pro on my computer. I rarely shut
down my computer, the last time it's completely shut down was about a
month ago -- I shut it down from the Start button, and the computer
turned off. The problem I'm encountering now, I've only noticed in the
past couple of days -- when I try to shut the computer down, it
restarts instead.
I've tried to shut the computer down via:
1. Start button
2. Hard power button
However, in both cases, the computer simply restarts instead. When
shutting down from Windows, it reaches the "Windows is now shutting
down." screen. Then it reboots.
I've unplugged all USB devices, and disabled "Automatically restart on
System Failure" in the Startup and Recovery section of System
Properties. Also, I've checked the "Wake on" settings in the BIOS --
they are all disabled. Strangely enough, the problem persists. I've
checked back, and the box is indeed unchecked. Can anyone offer me any
other suggestions?
Problem 2:
I cannot identify a specific pattern as of yet, but after about one or
two hours of use after reboot, Windows slows to a crawl. If I have
several applications open, I'll be able to alt-tab between them, and
they'll come to the foreground immediately. However, I cannot interact
with them. Each mouse click registers after a minute or two. Symptoms
that I've noticed, but cannot replicate include:
1. The initial slowness lasts for a duration of about 5 minutes. It
would slow down again after 10-15 minutes, and the slowness would last
longer and longer.
2. If I'm running a computer game, like World of Warcraft, the problem
does not appear until I've exited from the game. i.e., I can play for
over 2 hours without experiencing any problems, then when I exit to
windows, the system slows.
3. The task manager shows no processes occupying CPU time during the
slowness.
I noticed the two problems pretty much simultaneously: The slow/freeze
occurred, and when I try to shut down the computer, problem 1 occurs.
Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you very much.
