Restart after windows update

Leslie Isaacs

Hello All

Every so often my PC does an automatic windows update, following which a
restart is required. Ever 5 minutes (or so) I get a message offering to
restart now, or later. This can be a real problem, as sometimes I'm not at
my PC when this message appears and then, soon after, it restarts - but
often I have applications open that I do not want to close, some of which
should not be closed without first logging out of them, etc.

So, is it possible to make it so that windows will NOT initiate the
automatic restart>

Hope someone can help.

Thanks
Les

Set Update to Download & Notify, you can then initiate the installation

What really bugs me is whey you say: "Later" and then in five minutes
is asks again! When I say "Later", I'll tell WIndows when, and I
really don't appreciate being repeatedly asked over and over and over
do I want to restart.

IMHO "Later" should either prompt for how long, or just not come back
again until the computer is rebooted (or maybe till the next user logs
on?)

In addition to DL's suggestion you can also configure Windows Update
options with GPO or registry edits. See here:

How to configure automatic updates by using Group Policy or registry
settings
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328010

Configure Automatic Updates in a Non–Active Directory Environment
http://technet2.microsoft.com/Windo...0ffd-400c-b722-aeafdb68ceb31033.mspx?mfr=true

If you have not changed the settings and if you are getting Auto-Reboot
nagging while working you can stop them by issuing the following at a
Command Prompt:

net stop wuauserv
