resolution change and video card drivers

I have Compaq Presario 5000 [5UVM11]..For some reason, I cannot adjust
the
resolutions from 800x600, nor can I slide the bar from left to right to
increase the
color. I bought a new printer [HP] and because of the above, I cannot
install it
unless I change the resolutions/colour. My video adapter is: S3
Graphics ProSavage.

What do I need to do to correct the situation?

Secondly,and finally, when I tried to install another driver, my curser
would not go
above midway of my monitor.

What do I need to do to correct the situation?

Get rid of all traces of the old driver then install the new driver
while in safe mode.
