Resizing & restoring a saved photo

Hi, I have a JPEG photo stored that I can see as thumbnail -- which must mean
I should be able to resize it, yes? Original size was 2048x1536 pixels. I
tried to resize it and now all that's left of the photo is the left top hand
corner -- or something. It's a photograph of a large pillow that I want to
sell on Ebay. But the original size (and I have lots of photos stored that
are 2048x1536, they are just fine) on slideshow cuts the photo in half. I can
see the entire pillow as a thumbnail view only, have tried desperately to
resize it, and all that's left on the screen is a portion of the top left
hand side of the pillow. Is there a way I can resize/restore/other to fix
this photograph?

We don't know how you did the resizing so it is difficult for us to guide
you to repair.

But here are several "safe" ways of resizing. Before trying any of them,
make a copy of one of your photo file and practice on the copy instead of
the original.

Image Resizing

To decrease the size of the file for e-mail, web publishing, etc.

Go to this site and download the free Image Resizer. Exe file in one of your
folder.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once in your folder, double click on it to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.

New files will be added in your folder, same name as original file but with
the word (small) or (custom) added.

The first time you use it, you may not see Resize image on the opening menu
after you right click on a photo file or if you see it and click on it, it
may not work. If so, do the following:

Click on Run, click on Start and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

and press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI.

You should get a "success" message after pressing the Enter key.

Also, you can download a free photo editing software from here to resize
pictures and edit photos:

http://irfanview.com/

or another free software:

www.faststone.org

From this last one, you can directly e-mail a picture and it will
automatically resize it.

Another free one to do the same is:

www.picasa.com

Picasa has a nice feature to exchange pictures with friends under "Hello"

Thank you for these valuable tips, I'll print them out and try them now. Most
kind of you to write!

When I initially tried to resize and restore the photo, I simply clicked on
the icon at the bottom of the fully displayed photo (what was left of it) in
My Pictures: there is a series of icons at the bottom of the page, and I
chose the one furthest to the right, which says: 'Closes the Program and
Opens the Image for Editing' -- which it did, it offered me numerous choices,
none of which 'took' if you see what I mean.
