resizing photos

Can I resize (forlayout only) my photos for my webpage in FP just by clicking
on the photo and making it smaller or larger like you would do in a publisher
program? That won't effect the jpeg quality will it?. I've taken the pictures
via my digital camera, they are all in pixel size of 640X480. But I don't
want the view of my photos on my web page to all be the same size. Also I am
working in FP 2000, a little old and when I see download time, don't most
folks surfing these days have a faster motem then 28.8 or 56.6 ? I don't want
to do thumbnails on my home page and I was thinking that the loading time
wouldn't be that bad in 2006, thinking people have upgraded speed since
2006???

Oh that's an easy one. Yes, you can resize your pictures. Doubleclick on
them when you paste them in, and go down to the Size. Shrink the size down
after making sure the "Keep aspect ratio" box is checked. Voila, you have a
shrunken image. I'd recommend to do this more than stretching and shrinking
it with the handle boxes, because you risk losing your aspect ratio.

Yes, you can do this, however the file size is not changed and you see distortion. Best to resize
your images in a image editing application and then re-import back into FP at the actual size
needed.

visualize how you want it to look?

Well if you're going to do it in Tom's method, I'd recommend you put the
regular one in first, resize it to the way you want, then take note as to
what the pixel size is you want it. Then scale it down to that pixel size in
the image editor, save it as a copy, and import the copy in place of the
original. But that's just me.

Really it's just rather troublesome to do it that way. But as Tom said,
there is a little bit of degredation when it's resized in a browser, but it's
more noticable if you blow it up, not if you shrink it. It's also a lot less
work. Although I don't know what you're using it for, I'm guessing that for
the purpose that you're using the images, just shrinking it in the browser is
acceptable.

As for the connection speed thing that all of us have unintentionally
ignored from your first post, don't even worry about it. As most people at
least have an ISDN connection all the way up to fiberoptic connections now,
those pictures you want to use will be shown in no time at all, unless the
formatting is in .bmp or .png. But since you said they're in jpeg, then it
should be a cinch.

It is my opinion that FrontPage should not be thought of or used as an image
editor. Even though the program has various options for inserting images, it
is best that you not use them. When you click on this first thumbnail you'll
see that you could choose to insert an image from a file outside of
FrontPage or from a scanner or digital camera. For best image results, you
don't want to do this!

It is not advisable to do ANY image editing in FP.

Resize images in an image editor. such as irfanview, paintshop pro or
photoshop elements to name a few.

What "publisher" program are you refering to - even then you would edit
images in an image editor. But we're talking about internet sites here,
not desktop publishing. Anyway image *size* doesn't matter if it is a print
publication - these are two completely separate issues.

How do I put this so it isn't confusing?

Resizing a picture in FrontPage will not effect the picture itself, just the
way it looks on the webpage, which is what I am pretty sure what you want.
The drawback to this is there is a bit of distortion in the image that is
shown, but it's more visible when a small image is blown up, not the other
way around.
Rowe is suggesting you use something like Photoshop to edit your photos
after working the originals in FrontPage, creating a smaller copy made
specifically for the website. This will counteract the distortion that my
method would do, but it is a lot more involved when it comes to work.
E.T. is a bit confused. He thinks that I suggested that the photos be
edited on FrontPage, which it totally wrong. Resizing an image on FrontPage
does not make the change permanent for the picture, which is what you want,
right? You don't want the original altered once you're finished with it.
All three of our methods work, it just depends on the level of involvement
you want with the project, and how much of the original quality you want. It
sounds to me like your project would be okay without doing E.T. or Rowe's
methods, but try all three if you have time, and see what works for you.

I'm don't want to change the image after I have worked it in my photo editing
program. The one I use came with my Olympus camera. But I just want to
position them differently on my website page. Change the sizes as you would
view them. I would like a large phot and then a couple of smaller ones. I
just don't see how I can change them without being in the FP program??

You really need to use an image editor and resize the image, then click Save as and save it with a different name
the original image will be untouched.

Another reason for doing this is because: even though you've resized the image on the page,
the full size image is still downloaded from the server and it will make the page slow to load.

Thanks everyone. I "get it" now, sorry for being so dense! But boy I've
learned alot from you the last couple of days! I have Irvanview and Olumpus
photo imaging to experiment with. I didn't realize that when I "resampled the
image" or "resized it in pixels" that it actually made it smaller when
viewing. I just thought reducing the pixels made it faster to load.
I fooled around with it and it worked!

What I do is to import a copy of the image into FP, place on the page and resize, then I go back to
the original image in my image application and re-size the image, then I replace the first imported
image.

I sell signs, so I take pictures of my signs to put on my websites. A lot of
knowledgeable people have given you good advice, but I want to add
something that I didn't see mentioned. Download a ruler so you can
measure in pixels. Put a shortcut in your quicklaunch tray, and you can
click on it to bring up a ruler and measure whatever is on your screen.
You can measure what size you want your picture to be on your web page,
and then make it that size before you import it. I always have to reduce
the size of my pictures before importing them into FP. I also make all my
own order forms in Paint. I use a ruler to center everything on the page.

You got me to thinking. I always keep my settings at 1024x768. I put one
of
my webpages on the screen in FP. (All my wepages are the same width. That
saves a lot of time when making changes.) I put the ruler on the page and
then
changed my settings to 1280x1024. The ruler changed. So, my webpage
measured the same width, in pixels, at both settings.
I have Desktop Ruler. I got it on my old computer when it was free. I got
a
new computer recently, and it is no longer free. (They keep adding new
features.)
I was able to copy it from my old computer to my new computer. They are at
www.desktopruler.com There are other rulers you can download for free.
