Resizing a footer (Word 2007)

How do I decrease the depth of my footer? For example, it's about 2 inches
high and I want to shrink it to 1 inch. I don't mean distance from the edge
of the page, but the actual depth of the footer.

If the footer margin is set to a reasonable amount (the default is 0.5"),
then the footer itself may contain empty paragraphs or other spacing.
Display nonprinting characters to help you diagnose the problem.

Turns out it was the margin setting, but thank you for your response. Much
appreciated.
