Is there a way to resize /reduce the 'all programs list' that appears from
the start menu as i have lots of programs and i now have 4 columns wide and
cant read the last column properly.I dont want to delete any of the programs
but i seem to remember or have seen the 'all program list' in 1 completely
vertical position with an up / down arrowhead on it

Right click the Start button and select Properties from the menu.
On the Taskbar and Start menu Properties sheet, hit the Customize button.
On the Customize Start Menu page, click the Advanced tab.
On the Advanced page, scroll down to the bottom of the Start menu items box and
put a check mark in the box next to "Scroll Programs".

Another approach to this issue is to create new folders on your All programs
list and move the shortcuts to similar programs into these folders. The Start
menu you see displayed is a combination of the contents of these two folders
where YourAccount would be replaced by the name of your user account.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\YourAccount\Start Menu\Programs

You can organize the Programs folder the same way you would any folder. Look for
programs perform similar functions, create an appropriately named folder, and
move the shortcuts into the folder. For example, you could create a folder named
Security and move the shortcuts to your antivirus, antispyware, and firewall
programs into this folder.

Good luck

What you see there is a combination of the shortcuts, and folders
containing shortcuts, in these two folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Start Menu\Programs

You can reduce the amount of what you see there by using more folders
and fewer individual items. Create new folders there, and move
individual shortcuts into the folders you created whatever way makes
the most sense to you.
