I just got a new Pentium M Gateway notebook.

Sometimes the following window pops up with the following info:

wireless network connection status window
status = connected
duration=time
speed=11 Mbps

packets being sent

This window tells me that there are connections and shows me 2 connections,
1 of which it says i need
a password, the other one says that it does not need a password but it is
not secure, but when
I try to connect it doesn't go to any web sites?

First, as far as I knew, this computer did not have integrated wireless. It
is not a Centrino. What signal is it picking up, and what is the info it is
displaying mean? How can I determine if this notebook does indeed have
integrated wireless? Is there somewhere in Properties that will tell me what
it has?

Thanks.

It would have been easier if you had identified the make and model of
the notebook, but as far as I know all Gateways that have the Pentium M
processor are in fact "Centrino" computers. And you certainly do have
wireless.

As for the signals, 802.11b (which is what you have) signals can go for
quite a ways, depending on the structures in the way. When someone
installs a wireless access point or router, it transmits an invitation
to all receivers to connect. By default, there's no security. Unless
the person with the access point WANTS to allow strangers to connect to
his/her wireless network, he/she must take some security steps, like
adding password protection. Passwords are not, however, the only means
of protection, and you may have encountered a wireless network that that
does not have a password, but only permits previously-identified
computers to connect.

On the other hand, some folks are just generous -- particularly in
college areas -- and are willing to share their broadband ISP
connection. If you do connect to an unknown network, just be aware that
there may be others on that net who may have access to your computer.

Thanks for the info. If I do use this notebook to connect somewhere like a
school, coffee shop, etc. what can I do to prevent others from gaining
access to my notebook? Will Zone Alarm prevent others from getting access
when I am wireless?

My notebook is a Gateway
450ROG

Didn't you get sufficient answer the last time you posted this exact same
query, and I answered you, twice!
If you have additional questions, ask them.

<<snip of old stuff>>

it automaticaly connects wirelessly sometimes,

i Have a ethernet cable plugged into my notebook, and I notice a icon in my
tray that is shows that I am connected, then I look again and it shows a
second icon with the 2 displays and when I put my mouse on it it says that I
am also connected wirelessly. I never even tried to connect wirelessly!
Will Zone Alarm prevent someone else from trying to get in? Why is it doing
this? What can I do locally on my computer to prevent acccess to my files?
It says peer to peer networking.

Thanks.
