Hi to the group,
I am having a problem backing up using ntbackup (I am logged in as admin.)
for some reason the utility will not recognise the name applied to the
backup i.e. D:\Laptop Backup.bkf and the pop up suggest that I ensure it is
a valid path, and that I have sufficient access.

TIA for any ideas/solutions

RickO'Shay.
P.S. What does LOL mean? I see it in a lot of posts

A couple of thoughts:

1. Is D: your CD Writer? If yes, this explains it. Backup can't write
directly to the CD Writer. Save to a file, then burn onto the CD.
2. Have you re-checked permissions to ensure you have permissions? Try
using Notepad to create a file in the target folder.

Hi Rob,
Yes D is the CD Writer, I think I understans what you mean - save the backup
to say c:/desktop/laptop backup and then use either Roxio or XP to write the
folder to D - have I got that right.

As far as permissions, if I go to user accounts it tells me I am Computer
Administrator - is there more to the permissions that I'm not aware of?

TIA - Again!

yes.

If you have CD Creator's Direct CD or Drag to Disk installed, you can burn
files directly to CD-R's. I have done it many of times.

Thanks Rob,
One last question - is there any way of a) compressing/zipping the backup
file once made and/or b) can you span multiple cd's with a large backup
file?

TIA

RickO'Shay.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the tip I will check it out and hopefully end up LOL.

Cheers,

You can't write the .bkf file to the same partition you are backing up.
If you are just backup up specific folders, like My Documents
then you can, as long as it's in a different pkace.

Re compression... frankly, can't remember. Previous versions of Windows
has backup programs that had this, but my recollectoin is that XP's
doesn't. Check the "help" for this.

Re spaning large backup files ... this a function of the software used
to make the CD.

I'm sure that 3rd party backup tools that you can buy can be found that
have both compression, direct writing to CD's, and spanning CD's.

I write my backups to a file server (which itself is backed up properly)
so don't work the issue with compression and spanning CD's with XP's
program.
