Replying to and forwarding emails in Outlook (Office 2003)

Hello,
I have realized that that when I want to reply to or forward emails using
Outlook, the program sends them using my main private address instead of the
separate email address which I reserve for general matters and to which the
email was sent in the first place.
I have several addresses which I use for different purpose. I only divulge
my private address to friends and family but because of this I have been
unwittingly sending out my private address.
I am now getting loads of spam.
I have made sure that the private address is not set as the default but it
makes no difference.
Even if I specifically put in the address I want to use, the message is
forwarded or replied to using the private one, saying that it is sent on
behalf of the private one.
I cannot find out how to change this and I do hope that someone can help.
Thanks.

Outlook SHOULD reply to emails using the address to which they were sent. If
you forward an email, then there is the option, by clicking on the Accounts
Button (next to Send) in the compose window, to choose which account you
use to send the forwarded message.

Thanks Gordon,
I have just tried that and it sent the email from the address I chose in
Accounts by using that button. I should have spotted that but it had me
completely stumped.
Thanks again, much appreciated.

I couldn't find one so tried the General newsgroup and as a result Gordon has
very kindly replied and helped me to sort it for which I am extremely
grateful.

Hello John,

I think people who make their living creating spam know how to (extract)
your Logon email address.

This would be the primary email address you use to logon to your ISP and may
have little to do with your email client/server.

Websites (I think) can obtain this info when you visit their web page.

This is only what I believe (not what I know for certain).

Maybe you can open Outlook tools/properties and set it to NOT "send and
receive" for your primary logon email address and allow "send and receive"
for your other address.

This seems to work okay for us.

If you use EarthLink by chance, they offer a great spam blocking feature
that will stop most of it at the mail server. Set to maximum protection, a
mail sender has to request permission to send you email by filling out a
request form in which you have to answer before their email will fall into
your local mail box. The automatic email generators will soon go away.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

I had a quick look and found the following without even trying:
Microsoft.public.outlook
Microsoft.public.bcm
Microsoft.public.calendaring
Microsoft.public.contacts
Microsoft.public.fax
Microsoft.public.general
Microsoft.public.installation
Microsoft.public.interop
Microsoft.public.mac
Microsoft.public.printing
etc. etc.
This is probably because I bought a new pair of glasses today.

Thanks for your reply Pegasus and for your help. Unfortunately most of those
do not seem to be relevant nor to be official Microsoft groups.

Say WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?

:

They are *all* official microsoft newsgroups, and are located on the
Microsoft news servers.

Incredulous that you could come to such a conclusion. That was like
saying Wal-Mart doesn't appear to be a discount store.

You'll get more knowledgeable help for Outlook in an Outlook newsgroup:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.Calendaring
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.configuration
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.Contacts
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.Fax
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.General
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.installation
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.interop
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.printing
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.Program_AddIns
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.program_forms
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.Program_VBA
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.ThirdPartyUtil

Note that microsoft.public.outlook is indeed an newsgroup on the Microsoft
server

Hi Richard,
Thank you very much for your reply. It is frightening to think that spammers
can get such information direct and use it against us.
I don't have EarthLink. I looked it up and it seems primarily to be a USA
based service (I am in the UK). It seems a good idea though.
I will try your suggestion about Outlook tools and properites.
thanks again,
John

Bob I,
I appreciate that I may not be as experienced as you obviously are in
negotiating newsgroups.
We don't have Wall-Mart in the UK but as it happens I have heard of it
because it owns Asda. It isn't a discount store though. It is supermarket.

Your most welcome....

One other note tho. Your current ISP will use your "Primary" logon email
address if they need to contact you about changes in service or whatever.

So if you set your primary address to not send-and-receive, you might miss
some important information.
Maybe you can contact your ISP and ask them to use one of your other
addresses.

While your talking to them, maybe go ahead and change your primary address
to something different.
That'll slow down the spam too!

Be sure to go back into tools>accounts and update your primary account there
too.

Hope this helps...

One more thought,

Check the properties of your NEWS accounts via Tools>Accounts.

Make sure that the "Email address" AND "Reply-To" addresses are bogus. Just
make something up.

Check this for ALL of your news accounts.

Spammers (at least used to) scan news servers and fetch peoples reply-to
addresses. This was, or is, a great source of FREE email address for the
Spammers.

Besides, if someone (like me) replies to one of your post, you will want
them (me) to reply to the group discussion instead of your personal mail
inbox.

Thought about this last night!
