You're right, but I deleted the winsock2 from the
registry. I already tried to run the repair option from
the 2000 installation cd and it did not reinstall the
winsock2. Is there a way to roll back the registry to a
prior date like in 98 or Me, when I would just be able to
go to a command prompt and select a prior date? Any
other suggestions? Thank you.

If you keep this in the same thread it will be easier to follow.

No system restore in Windows 2000 You can backup your reg and create the ERD
by going to; Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Backup, then choose ERD, then
if you check the box for "Also backup....", then the reg will also be backed
up to
%windir%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%windir%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

You can replace a damaged hive from within the recovery console.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

I already tried the recovery console...it won't work. I'm
not actually sure what a "hive" refers to, but in the
registry under local/software/microsoft there should be a
winsock and winsock2 folder, i need to reinstall the
winsock2 folder manually. If by hive you mean folder then
that could help, but I deleted the entire folder so there's
nothing to repair, I just need to reinstall it.

This tells us nothing.

"I already tried the recovery console...it won't work"

This article may help with the terminology.

Since this is unconnected to some unknown prior thread I have little
idea what your topic is about.

It is clear that you don't know the terminolgy or have enough study
done for some statements you have made here to make any sense at all.

"folders" to which you refer (I think) are in reality "Keys" (in the
registry) for example. To not know what a hive or hive file is means
you need to do some learning before you continue with remediation
attempts. "deleted winsock2 from the registry" Why would you do
such a thing in the first place? It seems you have done major
surgery on your registry without any basic preparation, like backing
up the entire registry in advance. If you had taken that basic step,
then Recovery Console would be the method to use to roll-back to a
"pre-surgery" state. "in the registry under local/software/microsoft
there should be a winsock and winsock2 folder" What? First learn
how to show a fully qualified registry path, then realize that
"winsock" and winsock2" registry keys exist in multiple locations.
Such as
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip
\Parameters\Winsock\
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\
just for example.

I am sorry if this feels like a bashing, but people are here to help
people who want to help themselves.

You suggested that I utilize the recovery console on the
Windows 2000 cd. I already tried that, and it still is
not reinstalled. Thats what I meant.

You should take a visit to microsoft.public.win2000.general,
it's enough to make one a Linux evangelist.

validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
