Replacing Old motherboard

Hello All,

I have recently upgraded from Win 98SE – retail version (have original
disks) to Win XP Home – retail version. I now want to upgrade my mobo. Having
read the Michael Stevens article I have a few of questions please.

Upgrade run in Windows: Will I be able to run Install/upgrade (prior to
removing old mobo) from my Win XP upgrade disk?

Will I have to reinstall WinXP SP2?

What is the best (easy) method of setting XP to the new motherboard? Repair
Install or Safe Mode procedure ?

Thanks in advance for any help here

Best not to try upgrading from Win98 to XP, but to do a clean install on
that new motherboard. Make certain that you have all the motherboard and
other drivers (Video, Sound Card, Etc.) before you start.

If your XP Upgrade disk does not contain SP2 already within it, YES,
you will have to reinstall XP SP2 after this "repair." If you want
to, you can set up SP2 onto the XP Upgrade CD (create a newer CD) by
slipstreaming SP2 into it. To help you with the slipstreaming, you
can locate the Autostreamer tool.

After you replace the motherboard then a Repair Install is the best
(and usually the only) way to ensure that Windows operates properly on
the new hardware. Follow the adive from Michael Stevens for this.

If your Windows XP retail CD does not have Service Pack 2 included
with it (an older copy) then you will need to make a new Windows XP
installation CD that has Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into it. This
requires a CD (or DVD) burner.

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD:

Good luck
