I am suffering with a hard drive that is too small and I want to replace it
moving everything on the old hard drive to the new one. Can this be done
without damaging the integrity of the operating system?

There is a possibility you might have to repair the installation if its an
image you are restoring to the new drive.

Sure. I did that with the 40gb drive in my Gateway laptop - replaced it
with a 120gb. I loaded a Linux Live CD, backed all the partitions to an
external USB using partimage - swapped the drive - booted the Live CD
again and used partimage to restore the partitions to the new drive -
piece of cake. The whole exercise took less than an hour.
