Replacing Domain Controller

I am trying to replace my current domain controller with a brand new
computer. I've tried many methods of transfering the data over to the new
one and all seem to fail. Here is list of attempts and reasons for failure.

Firstly tried to dcpromo and transfer fsmo roles. This failed because a
merchant porgram we used didn't work after removing the old dc from the
network.

Then I tried to backup the old one and restore it on the new one. That
resulted in the new server not loading windows. (backup of system state and
drive c)

The user accounts seem to work fine when using the new server after dcpromo
but I can't demote the old server without having something to repair it to
normal if the new one fails. I think this could be the problem I have with
my merchant program. Any ideas would be helpful.

In what way did it not work? IF it is dependent on this
exact machine or exact name then it may have little to do
with normal transfers and we would need more info OR
you would need to contact those expert in the merchant
program.

IF it is merely dependent on THIS DC -- as a DC -- then
you almost certainly have a DNS problem. (Practically all
domain authentication and replication are really DNS issues.)

Run DCDiag on every DC to get close to a solution.

You might have to run a (subsequent) repair install if the
hardware is not similar. This usually works and has the
advantage that you still have both the original AND the
backup.

Part of the above makes no sense "having something to repair it to
normal"???

Three ways are usual:

New DC, DCPromo new, DCPromo old (move apps and esp. DNS)
Backup and restore, esp. System State (might need repair install)
Physically move the hard drive (might need repair install)

You need to be more specific in what you are trying to do.

For instance, when you say you are replacing the controller.. are you
upgrading from 2k to 2k3? or are you just replacing the hardware?

Can you give more info on this merchant program?

I bought a new server with better hardware and need to replace the old server
with old hardware. We are just trying upgrade the computer mainly. I can't
swap hard drives because the old hard drive isn't as large.

The merchant program runs our credit charges. It sends information from our
access database on a sql server in our office (different computer) to a
server somewhere and we receive a decline code or accept code. I don't have
the script for the visual basic program that sends the merchant information
or this would probably be much easier.
