replacing CDRW

I'm having trouble with a Samsung CDRW which all of a sudden claims that my
system does not recognize UDF format [though it had previously]. I've
uninstalled and reinstalled the InCD software which the drive uses but no
fix. I may have to send the unit back, so in the meantime I've removed it
and reinstalled my HP 9300 CDRW except XP doesn't recognize the drive. The
drive was "F" but now "F" does not exist. I've tried letting XP locate new
hardware automatically and I've tried using the installation CD from my
regular CD drive, but no go. It seems like I'm missing a basic step here.

Any advice as to the steps I should take would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

Hi Joe,

1) See if this helps:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm

Under section 8 - Problems - there is a link to a patch that often resolves
this problem

2) On the problem with the packet writing recognition, it may be that the
native imapi burning service is running. Try disabling it should you hook
the other drive back up.

Thank you for your response. Since I didn't really want to boneyard my Win95
computer, I elected to hang on to Samsung with WinXP in this new box.

I tried your suggestion to disable the native imapi service but may not have
found the correct access. When I disabled XP's access to read/write to the
drive, the drive disappeared and I was then unable to access it with the 3rd
party software. So I tried various configurations--none of which worked.

In my search for available options, I found numerous complaints regarding
the same issue: XP and CDRW's of various manufacturer's incompatibility.
Finally, I received a response from "Ahead Software AG [affiliate of Nero I
guess]" which, so far, has fixed the problem and it involved a simple
upgrade.
My Samsung is a CD-R/RW 252F 52x32x52 and shipped with "InCD 4" and "Nero
4.0.5.4" or something like that. At any rate, the version I have installed
now that works is: "InCD 4.2.9.1" and I don't know what I have for Nero now.
Someday I may look.

First I had to clean out the old version of InCD:

ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/InCD-CleanTool.zip

....then install the updated version:

http://www.nero.com/us/update.php?pak=5 (which is actually for InCD version
4), OR,

ftp://ftp9.nero.com:21/InCD35240.exe (for InCD version 3)

I post this hoping to save someone the frustration of trying to reach the
right people since when I first attempted to contact Nero, none of the links
or phone numbers were current (I was beginning to feel like a client of P.T.
Barnum). In the meantime I was trying to figure out how to find Nero so I
could chuck the piece of trash through one of their windows with a bloated,
melon-head popping out of a suit on the other side of the glass. Just before
I purchased my plane ticket, finally, Samsung reached Nero in my behalf and
Nero sent the correct information.

Suppose I could've made a long story short, but, oh well.

FORGET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This stinking thing still does NOT work. As soon as I rebooted, back to no
files on the CD.

Samsung is the first component I've ever installed that runs, but does not
do what it claims [guess I've been fortunate]. No doubt WinXP has something
to do with it, but I'm stuck with XP, but I sure won't be stuck with
Samsung!!

I'd ask if anyone were to find a solution to let me know, but if the
manufacturer can't fix it, I doubt someone else could unless Samsung turned
the code over to someone competent.

Please excuse the rant.
