replacing bootleg XP with legit copy

G

Guest

using When a friend installed a new hard drive for me (Compter #2), he
installed his copy of XP. Since I own a legit copy of XP, I want to
install/register my legit copy.

1st Question -- I have another legit XP on another computer (Computer #1).
How do I figure out which copy of XP is on Computer #1? Does it matter?

2nd Question -- Once I figure out which copy of XP belongs on Computer #2,
should I remove the bootleg XP and reinstall my XP? OR Do I just register
using the product key on my legit XP bought for computer #2?

PJ - the first thing you need to do is to go out and buy another copy of
Windows XP.
If you have 2 computers and only own one copy of Windows XP it may only be
installed and used on one machine - that is the way it is licensed.
If you have 2 machines and both have Windows XP installed on them then you
need to have bought 2 licenses for Windows XP.
see the End User License Agreement that you agreed to abide by when you
installed the OS
Start ... Run ... winver and click the link to view it.

Actually first thing he needs to do is determine if he needs to go out and
purchase another copy of XP.
From his post I got the impression he has two XPs and wants to know how to
and if he can use them. It sounds like both are valid and the "friend"
replaced his hard drive and installed a probable "corp" version. He seems to
have two licenses since he want to know how to determine how to tell which
is installed on
# 1 so he can use his unused original license to get rid of the bootleg XP.
He isn't even trying to move the license to another computer, so OEM
restrictions wouldn't be a problem.
The links below should solve his problems.

You're right -- I do have 2 copies of XP. You did answer Question #1 so now I
can figure out which copy belongs on Computer #2. (It had been on #2's old
hard disk so it had been legal, registered, etc.)

So now as to Question #2 -- Do I uninstall the bootleg XP OR just install my
legit XP over top OR something else?

Thanks,
pj
