Replacement for 6122 printer

W

Walter R.

I have been using an HP Deskjet 6122 printer for the last four years with
great
satisfaction. I especially liked the fact that it uses the large (42ml) and
cheap HP 45A cartridge. I believe this printer is similar to the HP DJ970c.

The printer has become erratic, it leaves large, colored streaks, and a
sample page
is scrambled. The "ink light" keeps flashing. I believe my problems started
when I allowed the printer to run out of ink in both cartridges. Replacing
the cartridges does not help.

Is there a replacement printer for the 6122 that uses the 45 cartridge, or
another cheap cartridge?

I use my printer at home and mostly for text, with an occasional photo.

I hate all these new printers with 5ml cartridges.

Thanks for any input

First, I'd be very sure the carts you are exchanging in there are
actually good. You don't say if they are new or refilled. They can go
bad at any time. Since the print head is in the cart, running it dry
should have no affect on the news good cart installed. I run a dry
color car all the time in a 930 printing only black to grayscale. If I
pop a good color cart in and adjust the advanced color mode back to
color, it prints fine again. I have run the 45's dry before too
without incident and then some just quit in the middle of a filled
cycle.

Why not try removing and re-adding that printer just for kicks too
after trying more known good carts.

PS. I feel your pain. Those #45s are great and very forgiving. I am
currently running dirt cheap dye ink in one and it's working well. I
install a tapered set screw at the fill port so I can simply remove
the screw and fill it. I have a stack of 45s so I can afford to
experiment.

Thanks, Al

I went to the thriftstore and bought a used HP 6122 for $ 10. Works like a
charm. I mention it because thriftstores may be an often overlooked source
of printers and printer parts.

I check the resale shops too. Most of what I have are curb finds or
cast offs from friends. When people know you like to play with
printers, they willingly donate their old stuff when they move on. I
have room for as many as four printers online at one time and scanning
separately. The all-in-ones have attracted so many that stand alones
are often free. And don't neglect garage sales where new carts often
show up.
