Replace Windows2000 w/ XP home

The Subject line says it all. I have an eMachine loaded
with Windows 2000 Professional. When I try to use the
Restore discs to load XP HOME, the computer simply boots
2000. I have already changed the boot order to start with
the CD-ROM to no avail. There must be a flag that prevents
a retro upgrade, but I havent been able to find it in the
knowledgebase. I am not interested in a dual boot solution
except as a last resort because the user has no need for 2000.

Any suggestions?

One cannot upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Home Edition.
Only Windows XP Professional will enable you to upgrade over W2K.
If you wish to install XP Home, then you'll need to reformat the drive first.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition(s), then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

Your restore disk may not be bootable. You should check the
documentation for instructions on how to use your restore disk.

Also if the restore disk came with another computer running XP,
what you are are trying to is a violation of the licensing
agreement.
