replace windows xp onto new hard drive

My old hard drive with Windows XP on it is in danger of
crashing. I have purchased a new hard drive and want to
get Windows XP onto it. Cloning with Norton Ghost was
unsuccessful. How do other people do this?

Most new hard drives come with a utility for copying the old hard drive to
the new one. Make sure that you didn't miss it on the disk that came with
the new drive.

How was it unsuccessful? What version of Ghost did you use? Post the exact
steps taken with the cloning?
Also post the system configuration for the hard drives when you executed the
clone and if you changed the configuration after the cloning.

When I clone a system drive to a new hard drive, I rejumper and swap the
hard drives after the cloning before rebooting.
I set the new drive as the primary master or the same as the cloned drive.
I leave the old drive disconnected on the first reboot.
The Ghost help files are very extensive and a great wealth of
troubleshooting information.

Install the new hard drive on the primary controller. Install the old hard drive as Master on the Secondary controller and slave the CD-ROM drive on the secondary controller.

Install Windows XP and your applications on the new drive and move your data and personal configuration files over from your old drive at your leisure.

but if you reinstall Windows you have to spend the next 4 evenings downloading Microsoft updates over your 56K modem..

Go for a Gost retry, make sure both disks aren't in when you first reboot, that can cuase both disks to crash according to Norton..
