Repeating messages

Outlook has received almost every email that has been sent to me since
April three times over in the last few hours. I have a POP3 account
(nothing else going to Outlook) which is also copied to a Gmail
account.

This evening, I returned home, awoke my hibernating laptop and found
that certain settings (wallpaper, screensaver) had reverted to
defaults. Also, Outlook has lost its Norton toolbar. I ran a virus
sweep - found nothing. However, since then, I have received almost
every email sent to my POP3 account since April. I have deleted the
messages in the web client.

Curiously, my Google News gadget is also flashing up the messages, but
they are not being re-delivered to that account.

Everytime I finish deleting the messages in Outlook and restart the
program or my laptop, the messages start up again from April.

Please help me - this is driving me crazy. Forgive my confused account
of the problem. I am tired and confused, and not terribly
technically-minded. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Almost sounds like that you ran a System Restore.

Do other settings (changed wallpaper, screensaver) stick now when you
restart the computer?
If so see http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/duplicates.htm

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I didn't run a system restore, but
something strange must have happened to my laptop while I was away
(when I woke the pc from hibernation, the two-three windows I had open
had closed). The only unusual thing I did yesterday was to change my
screen resolution, as I tried to play a DVD and got a message saying
that the overlay had failed. I have never had to change the resolution
to watch a film before, but now it is happening with every dvd I try.

The email problem seems to have stopped since I deleted the messages
from the server, but I have lost an important message I received in
2004 and various settings throughout my computer have reverted to
defaults.

I'm going to try re-starting now. Fingers crossed (everything's
backed-up).

Thank you
