Repeated Boot crash System32\config\systemced

Hi, This problem is driving me mad. I would really
appreciate any info that can be given..

I have recently built a new rig,

AMD 3400 64bit
MSI K8T Mobo
Western Digital 10K 40Gb Serial ATA
Nvidia 5900Xt
Crucial PCR333 512mb Mem
etc. etc.

Loaded win 2000 sp4 no problems, finished loading all
software and drivers, tried out the performance etc played
a few games then closed & shutdown.

Next time I re-boot I get the message "WINNT\SYSTEM32
\CONFIG\SYSTEMced missing or corrupt" cannot load. First
time i got this message I reinstalled the o/s over the
same NTFS partion, reloaded the drivers / software. After
a coupd of days I got the same error message. Next i done
a clean install, guess what same thing again.

I have searched various newsgroups and found that you can
repair this by copying the old archived file and replacing
the corrupt system file, fine I try this and it
works.....for about two hours.

Seraching again i have found many people have had this
problem and it seems it can be caused by many differnet
things, I will attempt to list.

1. Norton antivirus eating the system file thinking it's
adware.
2. Bad RAM.
3. Serial ATA drive (Either CPU to quick to allow clear
down of cache, or incorrect drivers)

I am toying with a couple of options

- New memory
- New Hard drive (I am loathe to do this as it is one of
the fastest of its class on the market)
- Upgrade to XP

I am tearing my hair out trying to fix this prob, please
help me !!

Many thanks,
Andy

I had this ages for ages Andy and in the end just installed Win98

Later I changed the motherboard to a different model and tried again and
2000 worked fine with the new mother board (same HDD, CPU and RAM)

Yes, I think I resigned myself to an XP upgrade. I can
get an OEM from Ebuyer for a reasonable price. From what I
have read this problem was inherrent with 95 / 98 / 98Se,
yet MS released OS patches to fix. This is not the case
with win2k.

Cheers,
Andy
