Reparing XP from a Disk

I'm trying to use my XP disk when booting up to repair a problem. When I
choose the "R" for repair, it takes me to a screen where my only option is
to key an Exit command. Why is this? If I choose "I" for installation,
doesn't that do a full installation? Can someone please advise me?
