Been having a lot of problems lately. Suspect Windows XP corruption. No
viruses found. In trying to reboot from the Windows XP Home CD, I get to the
console screen and select "R" for repair. Then I am asked for the
Administrator password. I have no password so I hit ENTER. Then I get the
prompt "C:\WINDOWS>" starting at me. Where do I go from there?

Thanks for your help,

Barney

Hi Barney.

You're hitting the 'R' at the wrong point. Press Enter at the first screen,
follow the onscreen prompts, then press the 2nd 'R'.

If you are trying to run the Recovery Console then you've been successful in
accessing it. Type Help at the command prompt and it will give you a list of
the commands it uses. You can learn more about the Recovery Console by going
here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307654
Personally I wouldn't install the Recovery Console I just run it as needed
from the CD as you have.

If you want to do a Repair Installation then take this link and look for How
To Run A Repair Install http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

If you post the problems you are having perhaps we can help you sort them.
Some problems only require a relatively easy fix, some are easier to solve
with a Repair Installation and some might require a clean reinstall. Or your
problems might be hardware related in which case try software fixes will be
a waste of time.

That is the recovery console, for minor repairs (eg damaged boot.ini
file). To do a repair reinstall, from the CD boot enter Setup, and
after the license agreement there is 'Repair installation'. Note that
this will undo all updates, back to the state of the original CD, so
have SP2 available on a CD to run first thing - before getting on the
net at all

Thank to Will and Alex. That worked. Unfortunately after all the help, work
and downloading updates, the problems still exist.

I get script errors using 'Help' in every Office XP application.

Thanks again,

Barney

Hi Barney
If you can, boot the unit into safe-mode and perform a system restore back
to the point before the Office install.
Once the system restore is done:
1/perform a system file scan [click on start>run>cmd>ok]-command prompt (a
black box appears)-at the flashing cursor type sfc /scannow push Enter key
2/perfrom a check disk at the command prompt-at the flashing cursor type
chkdsk push Enter key
once this is done it will have a report for you-look for any error in the
report-[it will state error, what ever it maybe] or the chkdsk will just
error out and inform you to perform a check disk with the f option.
3/to do this-at the command prompt-type chkdsk /f press Enter key
You will receive an error-press Y for yes and it will begin the next time
you reboot unit.
4/reboot unit>check disk should start-if it does not do the command again.
5/once this is done-the unit should be stable-install your anti virus
program-perfrom all updates to it.-perform all service pack 1 updates
install Office 2003 [if anyother office version perform updates to office
program to SR1 [first service pack for the office product].
6/once this is done and Stable-perform your SP2 install.
This should help stablize your unit.
