Hello:
I recently tried to do a windows repair from the recovery console. I
selected the R for repair it ask for my administrators password. No one uses
this computer but me and when I installed XP I did not create a password.
How can I proceed with my repair or do I have to create a password. When I
was asked for the password I just hit enter and went to C: prompt. What's
next?

Thanks.

Hi Gizmo,

The console is not like a Space Shuttle console, its a command prompt. You
did the right thing for a blank password (hit enter).

That IS the console. The command prompt is waiting for you to do stuff.
Like copy backup registry files like C:\WINDOWS\repair "software" to your
normal registry location C:\WINDOWS\system32\config

Etc. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Hope that helps.

That's it, you're in. The recovery console is not automated. It's a
command line tool with a certain set of commands. You have to tell it what
to do from among those command choices.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/en-us

If you want to do a repair install (aka in place upgrade) then don't take
the first R. Continue on, and then you can choose to repair the current
installation. There are some implications to running a repair install. All
updates from windows update after the beyond the service pack level
currently installed will need to be reinstalled. Data and programs should
be retained but make sure you have a full backup just in case.

That said, are you sure you want to do a repair install? What exactly is
(are) the issue(s)? What are you trying to "repair"?

Btw,

Often, as a last hope for restoring a machine that is in cyclic bugcheck,
actually copying the backup registry file like C:\WINDOWS\repair "system" to
your normal registry location C:\WINDOWS\system32\config will
defibrillate it back to life. If that fails copy the file called "software"
(no extension) to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config and reboot.

I used to do that often myself in the good old days of writing device
drivers. Now its much easier for me with Virtual Server / Virtual PC Yay!
:)
Oops I digress...

Good luck.

That's the Recovery Console, just as you chose when you pressed the <R>
key. The password for the built-in Administrator account was still blank.

The issue with my PC is freeze ups. I have had this install for more than
3 years and must have some buggy programs. I have zonealam and if I set the
program to do a system scan I will have a freeze up, before the scan can
complete. I don't know what happen to my sound card but it is not working. I
don't know what is causing these problems, but they are a major headache. I
thought a repair would solve this issue.

Ok, what you wanted to do was a repair install. I gave a link for that in
my first post. Honestly I doubt if a repair install will fix your problems.
It's hard to sort things out when there are multiple problems. The best way
is to address a problem as soon as it occurs.

Freezing can be due to any one of a number of things, hardware, software,
malware. For the sound issue see this link:
