I used the Windows XP Home disk defragmenter and now I
can't boot past the introductory screen with the three
green balls going left to right. After that there is just
a blank screen. No matter what I try, that is as far as I
get. I have tried booting from the update installation
disk and no matter what option I try, whether it be safe
mode, last original configuration that worked, et cetera,
all I get is a blank screen. I tried typing in R to go
into the repair mode, but can't access it because it asks
for an administrator password to go any further. I had
this Windows XP Home upgrade installed by a computer
repair show so don't what, if any, password they may have
used. Therefore I can't even use the repair function.
What can I do to get back into Windows XP?

When prompted for a password simply leave it blank and hit enter on your keyboard. The command you will be typing in once you get to the recovery console is fixmbr . If you want a list of available commands here simply type in help or ? and hit enter. fixmbr=fix master boot record.

Have you right clicked on the desktop, selected arrange icons, and the clicked
show icons????????

That would be rather difficult considering the login never happens, don't
you think?
