repairing and importing .pst file to outlook 2000

I have a problem with importing a backed up .pst file back into outlook. The
file is visable on my hard drive but when I try to import it I receive an
error message stating the path can't be found. And if I try to open it under
outlooks file it puts it an e-mail such as an attachment. I've run scanpst
but it to errors saying can't find path.
Please if any one has a suggestion let me know. Thank you
 
Are you saying if you run scanpst.exe, it doesnt but simply produces an err?

So within Outlook, if you do File>Open>Data File.........browse to your pst
it doesnt open?
