I am using Windows XP Pro Sp2 and Office XP Pro Sp3. When I try to browse a
particular folder containing only Excel files, my Windows Explorer either
very soon closes without warning or hangs with the Message that it has
encountered a problem and must close. I then have to re-boot. How can I
identify which file in the folder is causing the problem and how can I either
repair or reinstall my Windows Explorer.

See if anything here helps..
Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers:

Long delay before files appear in My Computer in Windows XP:

Ricky, I had a look at those links but they don't really describe the problem I get. When I open the one file folder with Windows Explorer and just scroll through it, after about ten seconds Explorer either closes all by itself or gives message that it has encountered a problem - then everything hangs and I have to re-boot.

Right-click on "My Computer" and select Manage.
Expand the Event Viewer category (click on the +) and browse through
each of the 3 sub categories to locate red-flagged error records whose
date and time corresponds to your problems with Explorer.
Double-click on an error record to see the details of that error.

Post the error record details back here if you need further advice or
assistance.

Note that the most common cause of problems these days is because of
virus/spyware infestations. Make certain your antivirus software is
completely up to date, with the virus definitions not more than 7 days
old and do a complete virus scan of your computer. Then get a "second
opinion" by doing a free online virus scan at one of the following
sites:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

Also check your computer for Spyware by following the procedures on
MVP Jim Eshelman's Spyware Quick Fix page at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Good luck
