Repair install

I am attempting to perform a repair install or "in place" install to avoid
losing data but when I get to the screen which shows the exidting
installation, there is not"R" or repair option. I do not want to do a clean
install as the P.C. is my brother-in-laws and contains important files (which
he never backed up). Any thoughts are welcome!
