repair install, "asms" error, and setup loop

Hello...thanks in advance for any help you can give...

I'm working on a laptop for a client. (HP Solo1450, WinXP Home--SP2?) Some
time ago, the CD-Rom stopped working. It runs when CD is put in, but the
drive is actually missing in "My Computer". Device Mgr shows driver is
either missing or corrupt.

In process of trying to find out about a driver (QSI, the manufactorer, says
there is no driver other than Windows driver), I decide it's time for a
repair install.

Part way through, it give me the "asms on Windows XP Home Editiion CD-ROM is
needed" box. Can't find, can't find, blah blah blah, cancel. Upon reboot,
it reenters setup. I've tried several ways around that happening (i.e. safe
mode boot), but as soon as I'm there, a box says "well, here we are in safe
mode, but let's get back to the setup" and that's it...back to setup, where
it again asks about the "asms" file.

Sounds like multiple issues, I know, but for right now, I can't seem to
escape this setup loop.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated...thanks!

OK, found I can work around teh "asms" error by using the Windows XP Pro
help, even though this is the home edition I'm working on. So, i'm closing
out my own thing here and will begin a new thread about the setup loop.\
