Renaming system folder

C

Catin Dehat

I recently had the pleasure of re-installing XP Home on the computer my wife
uses. In due course, I was able to give the name of my wife to one of the
three System Folders in the directory, Documents and Settings, "All Users",
"her real name", and the "Default User". My own computer says my name is
"Compaq Owner" and I CANNOT change it because it IS a System Folder. Does
anyone know how to fix it so that I am NOT anonymous?

Create a new account with the name you want. Log into it at least once.
Then copy the information from the old Compaq Owner account to the new
one. When all is set up delete the old account.

Sorry, Ramesh, but I probably did not explain my small problem exactly. When
I click the Start button, at the top of the list that pops up is an image
and my name. This is the name that can be changed when one follows the
instructions to create a new User Account. I am already the Administrator,
according to Start, Control Panel, User Accounts. What I failed to explain
clearly is that, whereas, on my wife's computer, one of the three folders in
the Documents and Settings folder has her name; on my computer one of the
three folders is called "Compaq Owner". It is THAT folder's name I'd like to
change to read my name instead of Compaq Owner.

Catin,

I understood that from your original enquiry. The user profile / home folder
name can be changed in the registry, but it's easier to create a new user
account, with the preferred name, which is the simplest option.

If you don't prefer that, see the following page:
